Resilient Healthcare:

From Electronic Medical Records to Cyber-Physical Security

Protecting healthcare data is only the first step towards cyber resilience: securing healthcare facilities requires a systemic approach capable of integrating IT infrastructure, electromedical devices, OT systems and IoMT technologies, while ensuring continuity of care even in the face of cyber threats. The objective is to extend protection to the connected equipment directly involved in healthcare delivery and responsible for maintaining its operational continuity.

The digital transformation of healthcare has profoundly changed how healthcare organisations manage and share clinical information. At the heart of this evolution is the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), an essential tool for ensuring continuity of care, improving service quality and making care processes more efficient.

At the same time, digitalisation creates cyber risk that extends far beyond data compromise, affecting a healthcare organisation’s ability to continue delivering care in the event of an incident. Protection must therefore extend to the devices that collect and transmit those data, from electromedical equipment itself to ward tablets.
Hospitals are a typical example of an environment in which people, data, networks, devices and systems must converge within a coordinated and secure operating framework. Recent regulatory measures have reaffirmed this requirement: in Italy, healthcare organisations have been included in the National Cybersecurity Perimeter (Perimetro di Sicurezza Nazionale Cibernetica) since 2019.
